Seeking milk for an 11 week old baby girl in Maryland
Through Milkshare and the WONDERFUL mothers on this site, I was able to provide breastmilk for Keira through 10 different donors, all of which are close to my heart. I have pictures of the donors in an album that someday I will share with Keira and show her how many people cared about her enough to give her the very best nutrition possible.
Here is my nursing story that I wrote up when I had been nursing Keira for a year. Its a long one I warn you!
----
My story actually starts in 1999 when I had a near fatal car accident which
crushed my pelvis and forced the emergency doctors to remove my right ovary due to laceration and internal bleeding. Also in the same accident, the sealtbelt crushed one of my breasts and damaged the tissue so severely that I developed a ton of scar tissue when it was healing. Because of this, I had a massive breast reduction in 2002 to remove the scar tissue and reduce the size of my breasts. I knew there was a risk that I wouldnt be able to breastfeed but since I already had been told I was infertile due to the ovarian problems, I didnt think it was a big deal at the time. After the radical breast surgery, part of my right nipple died due to lack of blood supply and the surgeons had to go back in and remove all of my milk ducts on the right side and some of the milk ducts on the left. The surgeries left me scarred and I was told there was no way I would ever be able to breastfeed at that point.
Fast forward 5 years to May 2007 when I gave birth to my beautiful daughter, Keira. See., throughout my pregnancy I was telling myself that I WOULD breastfeed even if it meant a tiny amount or just for a few days to give her the best start. I kept repeating to myself that I would make this happen and I would do all that I could to give my daughter the best nutrition possible. When she was born via emergency csection and was severely jaundiced and dehydrated since my milk hadnt come in, I was devastated. I tried everything I knew to make more milk myself but it just wasnt happening. When I was faced with putting my tiny baby back into the hospital for IV fluids or giving her formula, I broke down and gave her the formula but continued to breastfeed her sometimes for 2 hours at a time.
For the first 6 weeks of her life, I spent everyday at home with her on the breast trying to give her all the breastmilk I could. I would hold her and we would both cry hysterically together, both of us in sheer frustration. I started taking handfulls of herbs and pills to help with milk supply, up to 35 pills daily and I still saw only limited success. Then when she was 2 months old and still not gaining appropriately due to a poor/weak suck and extremely low supply, my midwife suggested I look in donor milk from a local mom. This is how I found milkshare. Milkshare is a networking site where moms of all ethnicities can come together and help eachother meet their breastfeeding goals. My first donor lived in Florida and sent us large shipments of milk but they were super expensive and sometimes arrived melted, leaking or damaged. Then to my great surprise, I found a local mom named Erin who agreed to pump extra for us as long as I provided her with a double electric pump. I was ESTATIC! We soon formed a great relationship and met up once a week for lunch and for a milk drop off. Eventually Keira started gaining weight and she was thriving on this new breastmilk. I was so happy about all of this! Eventually that mom had to go back to work and could no longer pump for us so once again I put out an S.O.S on Milkshare to see if I could find another donor for Keira since she had been doing well the 3 months that Erin had pumped for us. I found another local mom who gave us milk for 2 months until her son weaned so it was back to the drawing board for me. I was so grateful for the donors I had in the past and I have strong lasting relationships with all of the women that have given this awesome gift to my family. I met an awesome local mom who has a son 2 weeks younger than Keira and we have been meeting up since January for milk exchange. She is one of my best friends now. Keira gets 90% of her breastmilk from me, only needing 2-4oz a day from donor milk.
Words just cant express how blessed and fortunate I feel to have found milk donation. I feel such a strong bond with these women who take their time everyday to give their milk. Keira is growing up strong and healthy now and everyday I stop and think about the women who have made her life so enriched by their selfless giving.

Here is a picture of Keira before we found Milkshare, she was NOT thriving as you can see:
and then 5 weeks later, just LOOK at the difference breastmilk makes!!!
My husband and I would be forever grateful if you chose us. Im having such a hard time finding milk for Piper and Im terrified of having to supplement with formula in these first crucial days months. I am more than willing to help out in any way I can and I always pay for milk bags and sterilization supplies as well as replacing the membranes on the pump the donor is using. I even bought our previous donor a new Medela pump to make life easier on her. She was using a hand pump bless her heart!
Here is a picture of my 11 week old baby Piper and her big sister Keira who I credit Milkshare for her amazing immune system!
If you have any questions, PLEASE ask and again THANK YOU for being so selfless and donating to a baby in need. It takes a really amazing mother to want the best for her own baby but a true hero to want the best for someone elses baby
