My name is Dana, and I currently live in New Bern, NC. However, I will be moving to California on October 1st and am looking to donate all of my stored breast milk. I have approximately 325 oz of breast milk ranging from May - September 2014. Two thirds of my breast milk supply is unscalded whereas one third is scalded (heated to 180 degrees Fahrenheit prior to freezing). Unfortunately, I suspect that I am one of those women who have an excess amount of the enzyme lipase in their breast milk. Lipase tends to break down the milk fat too quickly which causes the breast milk to smell/taste soapy. From what I have read, however, having an excess amount of lipase is not harmful, but some babies may dislike the taste. Scalding breast milk prior to freezing inactivates the lipase and stops the process of fat digestion, thereby preventing the soapy smell/taste.
Due to all of the activities surrounding my upcoming move, I do not have time to ship my donated milk. Therefore, I would like to find a local recipient if possible. If you are interested in utilizing my breast milk, please respond so I can continue the donation process. Thanks!
