Almost out breast milk...anyone used homemade formula??

Post by blessedmommy on Sun Apr 25, 2010 6:26 pm

Hi,
Not sure if this is where to put this question...but I REALLY need info!!

I have posted in every place possible and even sent emails, etc to get milk donations but we are almost out, maybe 2 days to go. I really don't like the ingredients in formula and hate the idea of using it. I was able to nurse my biological son for 17 months and even donated tons of breast milk. It is killing me that I cannot provide milk for our newly adopted baby girl who had NO prenatal care. She arrived with no warning so I was not able to induce lactation. I could start now but know from previous experience (induced lactation in Fall and birth mom took baby back after 24 hours) that the Domperidone made me VERY tired. At this point, I am already tired and don't think I could handle it. So I am wondering if anyone has made their own formula. I have seen several recipes and have one that was recommended to me but I would LOVE to hear about someones personal experience with doing so.

Thanks so much reading and hopefully being able to share with me!!

I have been thinking about this myself. We are currently using half donor milk and half Earth's Best formula. I like that it's organic and he's doing well on it. But, I don't like the other stuff in it, or even the farm source for the milk.

I would probably use the Weston A price recipe. It's also the one on Mercola's site. I'm just not too sure about being able to make it up every day. I barely stay on top of things as it is. Embarassed

The recipe I have from my Naturalpathic Dr. is the Loffler-Wright Infant Formula. I have looked at it online and think mine has a few extra things in it! This one is really easy to mix together!

My son has terrible eczema which I am convinced is due to formula, because I was breastfeeding before and he got it when I couldn't breastfeed any more and had to switch him to formula. I am not sure if it is the formula specifically or a dairy protein allergy. Anyways I heard of people who had similar problems and were able to take care of it with goat milk formula. So I am trying a homemade formula that is based off of the Weston Price recipe. Unfortunately I don't think it is helping him so we are going to have to try something else hopefully donate breast milk. I can tell you I feel so much better giving him more natural formula then all that processed junk the store sell. If you are concerned bring it to your doctor or consult a nutrionalist to make sure the formula you are using is providing the right amount of nutrients for your baby.

I tried the Weston Price formula recipie but my son got gassy, fussy, and vomited from it. I was truly disappointed. Thankfully I make some milk and get donations.

That being said I think it is good in theory and worth a try!
