Can I donate? Empty Can I donate?

Post by Momma2L&E Mon Feb 21, 2011 12:59 pm

I have A LOT of breastmilk in my freezer and want to donate some of it...otherwise I am going to have to quit pumping because I WILL run out of room and I don't want to do that. I take two prescription medication. Errin is a low does birth control and 100 mcg Levothyroxine is for my thyroid. Both are safe to take while breastfeeding. Is it ok to donate while taking these types of medications? Would medications deter someone from taking my breastmilk? THANKS!!

Yes you can donate even though you are taking medication. You just need to be up front about your medication. Yes the medication might deter some moms from taking your breastmilk -- but I am sure there are some moms who would be happy to take it. Just post in your "state" forum the info about you and your milk -- how many ounces, how old, info about medications. If you read a few of the other posts you can get a good idea of the info that recipients are looking to know.

Good Luck !

The other reason that you need to be up front about it is that some moms are already on those medications and babies know when the taste of the milk changes and do reject it. I am sure that there are moms out there that are already on those meds and know their babies tolerate the taste or reject milk. On the other hand if you give it to some one without being up front about the medication their baby may reject it and they not know that it is because the flavor is different. I have taken milk that a person was on medications as I checked with a specialist who consulted with reference material about how the baby may react and what to look for. If the person is not on those meds you should have them check with their pediatrician to make sure that the meds won't interact with any pre-existing medical conditions (as many babies on this site are premies) Hope you find a taker. I wouldn't dare not disclose that type of information for the exact reasons you stated Mary. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be frowned upon to donate my milk because I take those medications.
If I am able to find someone to take it, you make a good point in having the recipient talk to thier baby's doctor before taking the milk. I'd hate for them to take all of that milk and then find out that they baby can't use it because of my medications.

I've posted in my state (South Dakota), but I'm not sure how much luck I will have as there are only two other posts in there and they are from the first half of 2010!

Thanks!!
