How Risky is This? Empty How Risky is This?

Post by MommyMichelle1234 Tue Dec 21, 2010 12:07 pm

Just joined today and am really interested in donating my extra milk to a local family. However, I am always super paranoid about things like this. Am I divulging too much personal information to a potential crazy person? Do I meet them in person? Has anyone encountered a negative experience via this web site? How did you find a local family to donate to?

Hi Michelle,

You can choose the route that is most comfortable to you.

You can either ship to someone or find someone locally/not far that would like to pick up. You can meet in a central location if you wish for someone not to come to your house.

Some people may request blood work to ensure you are disease free. Any other information on the blood work other than your name could be removed/covered up.

You can start by posting in the forum for the state you live in and/or in the "Willing to ship" forum and/or responding to a post in your state/"willing to ship" forum. Then check back on the forum or perhaps someone may PM you requesting your milk.

I'm about to donate to my 2nd baby, after 1700 oz to my first baby in a little over 3 months! You can PM me if I can offer any other help.

Hi MommyMichelle1234,

I am someone on the other side - we are adopting a baby and looking for donors. From that perspective, I can tell you that we as potential recipients truly appreciate what the donors are doing - the extra pumping and storing and shipping and giving of themselves.

There probably is a small chance that you could meet someone annoying or crazy - after all, that happens all the time in "real life" offline, too.

If I were you, I would start locally and meet the parents and baby in person. That would personally help me get comfortable.

Another idea is to call a lactation consultant - she may have a client with an illness who can't breastfeed or is on medication and can't use her own breastmilk, and could put you in touch so your milk would help that baby - in other words, she would have "pre-screened" the recipient for you.

I think it is very admirable that you are willing to donate!
