Our Milk Journey

Post by MummyBird on Sun Jan 17, 2010 9:36 pm

I wanted to add our story. I hope it can inspire others who are searching for donors.

My daughter had a very rough start on life. Because of her birth mother's poor choices, she was born addicted to several illegal drugs, and just didn't look or act like a healthy child. I induced lactation, but never produced a full supply for her. Supplementing with formula only seemed to make her health worse. She suffered reflux, terrible colic, and tremored to the point that the doctor thought she may be having seizures.

I found Milkshare when she was 6 months old. I thought, "OK, lets see how much donor milk we can find her to get her to 12 months, but we will probably be going back and forth with the formula." The day I gave her first supplement of donor milk, her issues vanished!!! She started to thrive and look like a healthy baby.

With the help of 10 donors, we made it to 12 months without another drop of formula! We finally ran out of donor milk at 17 1/2 months old. I was really proud that my daughter got a full year of only breastmilk.

My daughter just turned 2 years old, and she still nurses. I have found it is hard to find donations for a toddler, but happy that I can still give her what I can.

I am currently taking my courses to become a lactation consultant. I hope I can help others who are struggling, like we did.

...And when the day comes that she no longer wants to nurse...I think I am going to have my SNS bronzed!!!!!!
