Hello! I am mom to a five year old son and a 20 month old daughter, both of whom have Spinal Muscular Atrophy (the #1 genetic killer of children under age 2...never heard of it? We hadn't either, until our babies were diagnosed...). Since my daughter was born I have been pumping to give my son breastmilk as well as nursing my daughter. I have also donated my extra milk to a few other children, some healthy babies and some children with SMA. Children with SMA have inborn errors of metabolism that cause them not to be able to digest most fats and proteins, breastmilk is easily digested, this is why it is so necessary for my children despite their ages. Before my daughter was born my son weighed 27 lbs for two years straight. Since I reintroduced breastmilk to his diet he has gained almost 15 lbs! I am never someone who easily overproduces, I work hard for every drop I pump and I take domperidone as well as other galactagogues. I have received a donation of milk for my son from a friend in the past. Today I am here to ask if there is anyone in the KC area (I live in Olathe, KS but will drive a ways...) who might consider being a donor for my kids in the future? I will continue to pump as much of my own milk as I can (and nurse my baby of course), but I just can't keep up with a five year old and almost two year old anymore and they still desperately need my milk. My daughter is petite and only weighs 20 lbs, she does not tolerate many foods so I don't want to think of how skinny she would be without the breastmilk. And I want my son to continue to gain and thrive as he has since his sister's arrival. It is very hard for me to ask for help, but I am asking... Please if you think you might be able to help email me at smatype1and2mom at yahoo dot com I will be happy to provide you with pictures of my kids so you can see who you are helping and of course bags or the cost of bags as well. THANK YOU!!!
